As we quickly approach the season of Lent, House of Brigid has been busy in the New Year with Taize services, daily mass lunch-ins, and the wonderful Couple’s Mass we held this past Sunday, February 15th. The mass was a beautiful service, as it celebrated the couples who have been married at the church over many decades. The Vocare Choir prepared some stunning pieces for the mass such as “Set Me As a Seal” and “O Love”. This was my first time hearing these songs, and the talent of the Vocare Choir just magnified the beauty of them! It has truly been a blessing and an honor to be surrounded by such talent each week.

In preparation for the mass, we asked for couples that had been married at the church to send in a picture from their wedding day. Each couple was put on a board and displayed in the atrium, and it was beautiful to see all of the couples mixed together. The number of boards and images truly emphasized the longevity of the Newman Church community over the past few decades. With the church beautifully decorated, we were ready to welcome over 200 people!

Before the service, we plated chocolates for everyone to indulge in, as well as having sparkling juices and prosecco catered as well. The space was filled and quite lively. Once the mass concluded, we assisted in bringing chocolates around and taking Polaroid pictures of the couples to take back with them in remembrance of their marriage. I really loved seeing the age range of couples present for the service. I was able to hear some wonderful stories of traditions present in families from the past and more recently married couples. There was a strong presence of unity, community, and joy shared between everyone, which brought a brightness into the space. I love being a part of these unique and special traditions in Newman University Church, as I walk away feeling fulfilled and proud to be involved in such beautiful atmosphere. Now onto Lent!
